South Of England Athletic Association Indoor Championships
Lee Valley Indoor Athletics Centre, in North London, hosted the 2008 South of England Indoor Championships over the weekend of 19th and 20th January. Several athletes from Medway and Maidstone AC took part with notable success for two in both track and field in the Under 17 men's competition.
Alex Wharfe was first up in the 60mtr hurdles with a winning heat time, and PB of 8.55secs. to make it to the final. The final was close affair with Wharfe securing silver and a second PB, however the electronic timing failed giving Wharfe and his adversary an equal time of 8.5, with photo finish confirming the places.
James Alcock tackled two events, the 60mtr sprint and the long jump. In the long jump he managed six clean jumps securing a bronze medal, against a strong field with a final jump of 6.19mtrs, a new indoor PB. A large and very strong field in the 60mtrs. saw Alcock qualify for the second round in a time of 7.47 sec. equalling his PB. Although running a strong 7.49 in his second round race, it was not enough to allow him to progress.
Both athletes were pleased with their performances, and look forward to next weeks Kent Indoor Championships at the same venue where they hope to improve again ahead of the Nationals in February.
