National Young Athletes League 2008
Match 5 - 20 July, Walthamstow
Going in to the final National Youth Athletics meeting Medway and Maidstone thought that they would have to beat Bexley by over 100 points to get the second promotion spot. That was assuming that Bexley would come second, as the event unfolded M&M came out as comfortable winners and Bexley were beaten into third place, with home team Orion taking second place. This now means that M&M have been promoted to the Southern Premier Division for 2009 season.
As in previous matches the strength was in the under 17’s boys winning 19 of the 34 events. Alex Caine was in excellent form, winning the 400m, shot and hammer, equalling his personal best in the 400m and creating a new personal best in the shot (12.71m), some 70cm more than his previous best. New recruit, Joshua Brown, got a good introduction to competitive athletics with an excellent win in the triple jump, taking him straight to number eight in the South East rankings. James Alcock, after winning the long jump with one jump of 6.49m then went on to win the 100m in a new club record time of 11.2.
Another club record was equalled by Alyce Cooper in the under 13’s 150m. The record is now jointly held with Alyce and Annie Waghorn. Alyce also did a personal best time in the ‘B’ string 70m hurdles (12.4), the ‘A’ string was won by Jane Angus (13.1)
In the under 15’s boys Bradley Cox won the 400m with a personal best of 55.0.
Although there were only three girls in the under 17’s this didn’t stop two of them winning two events each. Lucy Jane Constable won the 80h (14.9) and the 300 hurdles (54.3) and Jodie Shaw won the shot (8.14) and the long jump (5.08).
In the under 15’s girls May Chisholm won the discus with a personal best of 19.75 and also the shot (7.21). Other ‘A’ string success came from Annie Waghorn in the 75m hurdles (12.2) and Sophie Ayre in the long jump (4.62).
With the promotion to the Southern Premier the club are really looking forward to the development of a track in Maidstone so that more athletes can be attracted to the club.
Match 4 - 22nd June, Deangate
U13/U15 Girls Team Manager John Ayre was full of praise for the part his team played in guiding the club to success when mandmac.org caught up with him after the meeting.
John said, "I would like to thank all the athletes that took part in the u13 and u15 girls teams, to the girls that took part in events that are not their best and congratulate all the winners, there are too many to name but I would like to mention the real spirit and guts shown by Annie Waghorn who fell heavily in the 75m Hurdles but still completed the race to gain valuble points for the team. She also managed to go straight back to the high jump while still in pain from the fall. Annie is somebody all the other girls can look to as the ultimate competitor, one that never gives in and competes to her best all of the time. Again, well done to all the girls!
Match 3 - 2nd June 2008, Lewes
U13 4X100m Teams
Katie White and Alyce Cooper, both under 13’s, scored maximum points for their events on Sunday last. Alyce won the 75m (10.5), 70m hurdles (13.2) and the long jump (3.91), Katie won the 150m (20.8), 800m (2.43.8) and the ‘B’ long jump (3.87). As well as maximum points in their individual events they were both part of the successful 4 x 100m relay team.
Once again Alex Caine produced two personal bests in the under 17’s, with wins in the Hammer (41.35) and the shot (12.08). Sean Hannant-Smith doubled with wins in the 400m (54.00), and long jump (5.61). Sean was also in the successful 4 x 400 relay team with Mark Cryer, James Alcock and Adam Harlow.
In the under 13’s boys Francis Lammas won both the 75m hurdles (13.5) and the long jump (4.61).
Although Jodie Shaw was a loan M&M entrant in the women’s under 17’s she produced some good performances in winning the javelin (27.48) and the long jump (5.07).
Four girls in the under 15’s were successful in winning two events each, Annie Waghorn won the 75m hurdles (12.4) and won the high jump with an outdoor personal best of 1.52m. Sophie Ayre won the ‘A’ long jump (4.54) and the ‘B’ 75m hurdles (12.8), Megan Angus won the ‘B’ 100m (13.9) and the ‘B’ long jump (4.30). Ashleigh Horton won the ‘B’ 200m (27.9) and the ‘B’ javelin (14.16). The under 15 girls also won the 4 x 100 relay.
In the under 13’s girls Jane Angus won the ‘B’ 75m (11.1) and the ‘B’ hurdles (13.1).
Medway and Maidstone finished second, five and a half points behind the hosts, Lewes. The final points scored were Lewes 356.5, M&M 351, Thames Valley Harriers 226 and Dartford harriers 134.5.
Match 2 - 19th May 2008, Horsham
Medway and Maidstone Athletic Club were convincing winners of their second National Youth League match of the season, scoring 348 points, the hosts Worthing were second with 311, Brighton & Hove 303 and Newham & Essex Beagles were fourth with 290.
The main strength of the team was in the under 17’s men, the under 15’s girls and the under 13’s girls.
In the under 17’s men James Alcock won the 200m and the long jump and was anchor man in both first placed relays. Adam Harlow and Daniel McCourt doubled up as A and B winners in the 400m and Nathan Breeds and Amreek Dhindsa achieved the same in the 800m. Other doubles were achieved in the 400m hurdles with Mark Cryer and Daniel McCourt, 3000m with Josh Elderfield and David Ryan, and the 100m with James Fielding and James Davies. Alex Caine continued his good form with success in the ‘B’ 200 and first in the ‘A’ shot. Mark Cryer excelled himself with a pb in the high jump where he earn’t maximum points for the team with first place in the ‘B’ string.
In the under 15’s girls four athletes achieved seven first places between them. Nicola Keegan won the 100m ‘A’ and the high jump ‘B’, Annie Waghorn won the 200m ‘A’ and the high jump ‘A’, a further double for Sophie Ayre in the ‘B’ string with success in the 100m and the 75m hurdles. The seventh first place went to Ashleigh Horton in the ‘B’ 200m.
In the under 13’s girls three athletes gained maximum points in three individual events each. Alyce Cooper won the ‘A’ 150m, ‘A’ 70m hurdles and the ‘B’ long jump. Katie White won the ‘A’ 800m, ‘A’ long jump and ‘B’ 150m and Laura Norris won the ‘A’ high jump, ‘A’ shot and the ‘B’ 75m.
In the 150m Katie chalked up a PB and Alyce equalled hers before registering a new PB in the hurdles. Katie won her long jump with an outstanding PB of 4.14m and again in the 800m registered 2.43mins outsprinting the Worthing athlete and showing great talent for a first year Under13.
In the shorter sprints, Laura Norris won the 75m by a clear margin, Jane Angus was narrowly beaten on the line in her 75m. Angus and Norris competed in the Shot putt with Laura winning the A string with a throw of 5.12. Laura also won the A string High jump with a jump of 1.28m. A strong performance was put in by Kayleigh Williams although unwell, she ran a strong 1200 and showed great promise of things to come.
The U13G relay team (Norris, Cooper, White, Angus) were unbeatable, finishing around 50m clear of the next team with a 56.7 time.
In the under 15’s boys Bradley Cox won the ‘A’ 400m, Jordan Jivanda won the ‘A’ 80m hurdles and Thomas Howlett won the ‘B’ high jump.
In the under 13’s boys there was a double in the 800m, Josh Gibson won the ‘A’ string and William Stockwell the ‘B’ string. Francis Lammas won the 75m hurdles, Lewis Heffernan the ‘B’ long jump and Stephen Jones the ‘B’ 1500m.
Match 1 - 4th May 2008, Sutcliffe Park
Medway and Maidstone athletic club started off their UK Youth Athletic League with second place on Sunday at Sutcliffe Park. Hosts, Cambridge Harriers won the match with 427 points, M&M followed with 331, Ealing & Southall 309 and Ashford trailed with 269.
The under 13’s boys was the strongest section with two athletes winning three events. Lewis Heffernan won the ‘A’ 100m, the ‘B’ 200m and the ‘B’ long jump. Francis Lamas won the ‘A’ hurdles, long jump and high jump. Josh Gibson won the ‘A’ 800m, Chris Corbishley won the ‘B’ 100m and Louis Jennings won the ‘B’ 1500m. The under 13’s boys also won their 4 x 100m relay.
The second strongest section was the girls under 15’s, not only filling most of the events but winning eight of them. The best performance was Nicola Keegan, who won the 200m with a time of 26.6, Sophie Ayre backed her up well with a first in the ‘B’ string with a time of 28.3. Sophie also won the ‘B’ string in the hurdles and the long jump. Annie Waghorn won the ‘A’ string of the hurdles and the high jump, Cerys Sanders won the ‘A’ 1500m and Francesca Bayliss won the ‘B’ high jump.
In the under 13’s girls Alyce Cooper won the ‘A’ hurdles and the ‘B’ 150m, Laura Norris won the ‘B’ 75m and Jessica Murphy won the ‘B’ long jump. The under 13’s 4 x 100m team also gained first place.
In the under 17’s men’s the only track success was in the 400m, Sean Hannant-Smith and Adam Harlow won the ‘A’ and ‘B’ strings respectively. In the horizontal jumps James Alcock won the long jump (6.34m) and Stuart Ballard won the ‘B’ string. Ballard completed his debut with a win in the triple jump (11.54m). In the 4 x 100 the M&M team of Alcock, Ballard, James Davis and Alex Caine won in convincing style, two and a half second in front of second placed Ashford.
In the under 15 boys Sam Shaw won the ‘B’ string hurdles and javelin, James Head won the ‘B’ string 800m and Sam Gibbons won the ‘B’ string shot.
