Lucy Underdown

The club's 2009 Enlgish Schools Discuss Champion is one of its brightest stars and clearly enjoys her athletics!  Find out more about why she feels she is lazy and what she thinks of her twin sister!

Name: Lucy Underdown

Age: 18

Main Event(s): Discus and Shot

Your Favourite PB’s: Discus 44.84m Shot 13.22m

Have you won any titles or been selected for county teams or major events?

I have been selected for Kent a number of times, I have represented the South and was a part of the South East team at the first UK School Games. I am the Senior Girls English schools champion for the discus and I won the discus at the AAA’s at U15.

How did you get into the sport?

My sister broke the primary school record for the 80m sprint and was told by a teacher to join an athletics club. We joined Paddock Wood AC and I only went along to keep her company and I’ve been doing athletics ever since. We changed to M&M at the beginning of 2008.

Who is your coach?

Mark Chapman

How often do you train?

3 times in Summer (1 weights session and 2 throws sessions plus comps at weekends)

4 times in Winter (1 weights session, 2 circuit sessions and 1 throws session)

What is your favourite training session?

I tend to moan at every training session as I am quite a lazy person but my favourite session is probably throws sessions because they don’t involve as much hard work as a circuit or weights session.

What is your proudest moment or biggest achievement in the sport?

I was quite chuffed when I won the discus at AAA’s at U15 because I had only been doing discus seriously for just over a year.  However, winning the English schools this year is my proudest moment because it was my 6th year and I finally cracked it!

What are your current aims and targets?

To keep improving and getting PB’s and I am hoping to qualify for the European juniors next year

What are your long term aims and targets?

To compete for GB and like most others compete at the Olympics

Who is your athletics hero?

I don’t really have one but I do admire anybody who can still stand on their own 2 feet after completing one lap of the track!

What do you enjoy doing away from athletics?

Whopping my sister’s arse at the Wii, I am amazingly brilliant – she is average. I also go to music gigs when I can afford it.

What is your job or what are you studying?

I am going to Christ Church University to study Sport Science which is going to be quite challenging as I am not the brightest spark in the bulb

Do any of your family compete in the sport?

My sister she plods away doing the javelin and the long jump…

… if it wasn’t for her amazing speed in Year 5 in the 80m I wouldn’t be doing it (I doubt if she could keep that speed up nowadays!)

Who is your best friend in the sport?

I suppose I have to say Amy. There are three reasons for this. Firstly, she is my twin so I am stuck with her, secondly she is the only person that I regularly train with and lastly, she doesn’t have anyone else as she tends to be a tad anti-social at times.

Anything else you would like to add?

Can’t is not a word (apparently) so you have to say that you are having difficulty with it.

Always do what your coach says, rumour has it that they are always right, so there’s no point in arguing.  Don’t walk across the field when people are throwing, Mark tends to get angry!
