2009 Kent X-Country Championships
Detling, Maidstone 10th January 2009
Senior Men
Mike Coleman made history by becoming the first athlete to win the Senior Men’s title 6 years in succession. His dominance of the race started from the gun as he set a blistering pace which he never let up. If any challenge was to materialise it would have come from teammate Neil Renault. Neil made several charges to bridge the gap during the race but ultimately Coleman’s love of the country and the conditions on the day left him with a memorable victory. The team came into the race knowing that Tonbridge would provide a strong challenge for the team titles that the team had won for the previous three years (and 6 of the last 7 years). On the day, the strong scoring from Coleman and Renault, coupled with an inspired run from Tom Collins and gutsy performances from Pat Curran, Adie Lowther and Tim Alexander mean the six to score trophy was retained. The 12 to score looked lost, until the result was announced at the presentation and M&M had scraped home by 4 points! Proof, if ever it was needed that every man needs to take every position possible.

Senior Women
Natalie Gray claimed her first Senior Women’s title and led the M&M ladies to the team gold in the process. Gray ran an excellent tactical race, following eventual runner up Bryony Proctor for the first half of the race. As Proctor showed signs of weakness Gray took the lead and opened a commanding gap with ease. Helena Penfold ran a strong race to finish third and Louise Watson battled all the way to the line to complete the scoring team. Sarah Kenyon ran well to finish 24th but it was disappointing the team was two short of the six to score team.
